Heroine

After charting Biston's features, I dreamt of
Eleanor as a fairytale princess whose prince never
came to rescue her. I'm not a fan of fairytale
princesses, but I love Eleanor's realization that
there are no knights in shining armor. She has to
rely on herself to break free.

Eleanor's very much like a clipped bird,
handicapped by the people who supposedly love her.
If not for her idolization of a woman who overcame
much more, Eleanor would have given up after the
first failed escape attempt. Each failure shrinks
her prison, but impossible hope pushes Eleanor to
try again.

In the dream she tortured her prince at the end,
but that wouldn't work for an erotic romance.

Hero

King Erick Duran is based on the Five of Cups
tarot card. He sees only what he's lost, not what
remains.

In the dream, his hatred of his mother kept him
from valuing women. That trait probably came from
my fear of boyfriends' mothers. (They all hated
me.)

Villain

Everyone has played the villain at some point,
usually unintentionally. One person's villain is
another's hero. Erick's villains - his mother and
Gildon's queen are Eleanor's heroes.

I don't believe in pure evil. Even the worst
villains had soft spots.
