Physical Characteristics Wizards are often called the self-made race. That's true in more ways than one. The most obvious physical characteristic of a Wizard is the massive muscle that bulges from his or her broad frame. They work hard to break and rebuild muscle tissue so as to increase their number of mitochondria which creates the energy necessary for their form of magic. They almost look Human, except for their larger size and eerie eyes. Some Wizards have silver, yellow, or orange eyes. Others simply have a brighter shade of a Human eye color. Like Elves and some Humans, Wizards have mind shields to protect their thoughts. Few, however, can transmit thoughts telepathically. Ability for Magic Wizards also have the same subcellular structure as Elves to convert energy. Wizards produce as much or more energy as a Human, therefore can power difficult and dangerous energy conversions that Elves can't. Very high-level Wizards can emit an electromagnetic wave that cooks a person from the inside out. (Humans use plastic to defend against such Wizardry.) Wizardry isn't limited to spells. They also study chemistry to create concoctions with all sorts of uses. Wizards create potions that evoke emotions, treatments for illnesses, powders that explode on contact, and of course - poisons. Many Wizards argue that Wizardry includes their style of physical combat since it's part of their schools' curriculum. They use not only their blades in battle, but their whole bodies. Elbows, fists, and knees are just as deadly as their blades. Wizardry Mating Rituals Prior to the War of Magics, male and female Wizards came together for reproduction purposes once a year at the Festival of Creation. At any other time, Wizard genders did not associate with each other. Their boys and girls were raised in different schools, then dwelled in different houses of magics. Some attribute this lack of emotional connection with the opposite gender as being the cause for Wizards' aggressive nature. After Wizards lost in the War of Magics, their city lost to the depths of Hell, they no longer had the luxury of separate houses. They had to band together to rebuild. Relationships between the genders evolved along with their society, and their wars ceased. History It's still widely debated whether Wizards descended from Hybrid Elves. Some argue that because Hybrids can perform high-level Wizardry spells without the strenuous physical training that Wizards endure, that Wizards must be dilute Hybrids. Wizards, however, still cite historic texts as evidence that they descended from a Human settlement in the Krohnos Mountains. Note from Ness At the word "Wizards", I know people picture old men with long beards who walk with canes. However, what do Wizards look like when they're young? I imagine that to perform very powerful spells you'd need a lot of power, which comes from mitochondria in your cells. Athletes have more mitochondria than couch potatoes. Bulking up through strenuous exercise (breaking and rebuilding muscle tissue) signals the mitochondria to reproduce. Thus, a thickly muscled person has more cellular power than the scrawny stereotype of a Wizard. Plus, I like that a Wizard can become stronger through hard work - both mentally and physically. Wizards won't always play the bad guys in West New Pangaea. I have a novel in the works in which Wizards are the heroes. It's second in line on my writing schedule. |
